The Board Dame Strategizes! Root!

So I’ve been thinking about Root a lot lately, and went back and listened to my initial podcasts and opinions. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the game very very very much. But I increasingly dislike playing it with new players.
Because of the whack-a-mole aspect of the game, inexperienced players inadvertently let others win and there’s little other people can do other than sacrifice themselves to just let someone else win. So it won’t even benefit you.
I’m at the point now where if new players ask to learn the game, I will teach it and then sit out of the game as it’s imbalances really show.
I’m not sure how this can be mitigated. I really don’t think it can. There are clear winners when you have new players as they are so focused on their own abilities, so they aren’t contributing to the game in the way it’s meant to be.
I hate to say this, but when introducing the game to a new player, you almost have to give them a faction that you know won’t fuck it up for other players. Which is really hard to do.
When playing with experienced players, you can really see the game shine. It’s funny cause, this is basically the opposite of what SUSD said.
Anyone have a few months in of this game and are having similar thoughts. What do you think?

  1. We recently started playing this game and are by no means experts. But I can see what you mean, we’ve had similar experiences where the new players aren’t really contributing to the gameplay since they are too focused on their own faction.
